All my email newsletter subscriptions go into a folder on my computer automatically. I do this to save myself from distraction, and I look through this folder every couple of days.
I scan, I delete and I read that which pops out at me! I am looking for emails that are interesting, relevant OR that come from a sender who I feel a personal connection with.
Go ahead and take a look at your inbox. Which commercial emails will get your attention? Take note of what gets your attention and why!
Because unless you have nothing else to do, you are unlikely to read everything commercial that hits your inbox.
Here’s a tip I learnt a long time ago that allows a service based business to stand out. I know it works because it is often what keeps me interested in other newsletters.
And that is… give a little of yourself to your readers.
Let your readers get to know you. This may mean sharing an insight, something that is going on in your life or your opinion on something. This allows you to stand out a little from the crowd. You become a unique and real individual or face of a business. And if you’re in an industry where there is lots of ‘competition’ often the only difference in your content from what others share is YOU.
“The only gift is a portion of thyself” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
At the risk of losing a few people who are unable to ‘connect’ with you, you will actually allow those that matter to truly begin or continue to ‘connect’ more closely with you.
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind” ~Dr. Seuss
And I end this tip by reminding you that it is tough to unsubscribe from a newsletter when you are feeling a connection to the sender.
Again take a look at your own subscriptions and see if this is true for you.
Let me know what emails get your attention ~ I always love to be made aware of what people are reading and enjoying…
The above focus is on your email newsletter however the exact same idea applies to your Facebook page, your website and just about every other ongoing communication you have with your clients and potential clients.
Give a little of YOU!
Hi Belinda
Firstly thank you for the continual tips and contact. You are so right about the personal touch.
I was concerened that my ‘about me’ on my website may have been too much but having had a few comments, people able to address emails to an actual NAME and person and now your newsletter I feel so much better for it. Many people are too used to the impersonality of the ‘net.
While I did meet you a few years ago I find that I read your emails even if they are not pertinent to my needs.
Keep up the great work and I will look forward to reading your next newsletter.
PS The weather is perfect down here at the moment too – Spring has well and truly sprung
Cheers for now
Debbi
Awesome! Firstly, thanks Debbi for being a long time reader of my newsletter, I appreciate YOU. I just checked out your Whats On Central Coast website and I can see you put lots of time and personal energy into the site. I say go for it with the personal touch!
I love the Central Coast and always will, it is my second home now that I’ve moved north. Let me know if there is anything you’d like to see me cover in an upcoming newsletter.
