I often get asked how often to send a newsletter.
The short answer is… it depends.
Sending more often means your subscribers get more regular reminders of your existence. You have greater opportunity for them to get to know, like and trust you. There are more frequent opportunities to inform, educate and sell to your subscribers.
Sounds fabulous doesn’t it? But…
As well as being a lot more work to send more emails, a big negative of sending more often is annoying and losing subscribers. With your readers getting more emails from you they have more opportunities to unsubscribe and leave your world.
I recently unsubscribed from a list I’ve been on for years. I still like the sender, BUT my inbox was over it. It felt like I was getting an email just about every day and most were trying to sell me something. I wanted the newsletter, but heck, I didn’t want the constant bombardment of my inbox with sales pitches.
And if you decide to be wary and go with monthly or even quarterly the upside is that it’s less work for you. The downside is that it may NOT BE ENOUGH. You may be forgotten in the rush of life, and you lose opportunities to inform, educate and sell.
After all, if it’s not you that is building a relationship and servicing the reader with great offers, then it will be someone else. For skilled marketers with a growing list, sending more often equals more sales.
So we come full circle… how often should you send a newsletter?
As I said at the start… it depends. Every business is different and it’ll depend on your ability to publish at a consistent interval. For most small businesses once or twice a month is ideal. Not too often, but often enough! Whatever frequency you choose, be consistent.

Thanks Belinda for this blog topic! I have been lax on my newsletter for just this reason – not sure how often! I think I will take your tip and look to do a small newsletter fortnightly with a tip and then a weekly blog so that it is not overdone!
Thanks Kristy. Sounds like you’ve got yourself a plan!
Keeping the newsletter shorter is well worth it and your subscribers will likely appreciate it!
You can certainly blog more often and the blogging is a plus for search engine optimisation too!
